Was South Pacific (1958) movie filmed in Pulau Tioman?

According to the Wikipedia entry for South Pacific, it was unlikely that Tioman was featured given the logistics needed.

IMDb however listed Tioman as one of the filming locations.

Similarly Rowan McKinnon mentioned Tioman Island in his book South Pacific.

Was it or wasn’t it?

The resemblances are certainly there. Let’s take some examples below.

This is a screen capture from the opening credits.

This is the stream running through Berjaya Resort

Does it look like the same place?

This is when Joe Cable and Sgt Billis is approaching Bali Hai

This is a shot of Paya village from kayak.

This is after Cole and Billis landed on Bali Hai. Hawaii or Tioman?

Two screen captures of Bloody Mary’s hut by the waterfall.

Does this look like the waterfall at Juara?

What do you think?  Was Tioman in the film?

  1. When I was on Tioman Island in Dec. 1997, it was said in Lonely Planet's Malaysia & Singpore guide book that the movie - the biggest success in 1958 in USA - was partly shot there. I thought it was peculiar, since it's so far away from the other location sets, but it said so on Imdb too (they have since removed it, and according to Wikipedia, there's only rumours"...

But the #1 movie of 1966 (in USA), 'Hawaii' - also based on a novel by James Michener - was shot both in Hawaii and Massachusetts, as well as Tahiti/French Polynesia and - Bodø, Norway...so I say yes to Tioman Island. Although I have yet to see the movie...

    1. You are right, I lived on Tioman for 3 years and the mountains in the movie are definitely not Tioman.
But the South Pacific Resort of course insist in that story :) never mind, I liked it for a while. Now it's gone too touristy and only divers.
